Life's a beach

Updated: 2007-08-10 10:27

Beijing will reveal her inner beach babe this week, with the
International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach Volleyball Women's
Challenger grabbing the spotlight from the line-up of Olympic test
events. Chaoyang Park's brand-new beach volleyball ground is ready,
complete with white sand and peppy cheerleaders.

?

The event, from August 13 to 19 will give players, spectators and the
media a preview of the arena, which was built for next year's Games at
the site of a former industrial area.

?

Classified second to the International Open, the FIVB competitions
provide an excellent opportunity to test the management system, ground's
facilities and operational capabilities.

?

Besides acting as a general rehearsal for the Olympics, this year's event
boosts tough and exciting competition, according to the FIVB. The main
court will be the 12,000-seat Olympic venue in Chaoyang Park, also called
the Sun Park, where 24 teams will compete seven days following the
Olympic formula, testing each organizing detail which will be repeated
from August 9 to 22, 2008.

?

"We will seriously deal with the FIVB competitions to gain experience for
the Olympics," said Cheng Lianyuan, chief organizer and head of Chaoyang
District government.

?

In its preparatory work, the committee regards the organization of the
competitions as its main task, the venue as the base and the venue owner
as the logistics supplier, Cheng added. The sand is another key factor
for the competition.

?

A total of 22 trucks of sand have been unloaded at the end of June and
the sand had been checked by FIVB experts. A second batch of 7,000 tons
of the same sand arrived days ago, to be poured on the main court and on
two side grounds in different layers in time for the Challenger free
training sessions, from August 11. Curious locals can also touch the
rarely-seen sand in Beijing, which appears white from a distance, but on
closer inspection is flecked with yellow granules.

?

?"It feels good, very thin and clean - not sticky - and it runs quickly
through your fingers," a passer-by said. At a total cost of 10 million
yuan ($1.28 million), each shipment spends 12 days aboard a boat from the
south China island of Hainan to Tianjin port and then a further two hours
or more being trucked to Beijing. The Chaoyang Park beach volleyball
venue, the first in mainland China, will continue to offer residents a
taste of the seaside after the Games.

?

Entertainment, always twinned with beach volleyball, will also be trialed
at this month's event. As one of China's most famous recreation venues,
Chaoyang Park has many modern projects ready to accommodate the Olympic
Beach Volleyball Tournament. The Sun Park Wheel is one of the wonders.
Standing 208 meters high, northeast of the Olympic Beach Volleyball
Ground, it will become the world's largest observation wheel. And
cheerleaders have already begun rehearsing for the Challenger, part of
the raft of activities dubbed, Good Luck Beijing. Different cheerleading
teams have held their training sessions on the main court since last week.

?

Schedule for the Challenger

Ticket: 10-80 yuan.

Preliminary rounds of 6-14 matches a day, 9am-11:50pm, August 13-16;

Quarter finals, 9am-10pm, August 17-18;

Finals on Aug 19, 9am-9:50am (Bronze Medal Match), 10am-10:50am (Gold
Medal) and 11am-11:30am (Medal Ceremony).

Tel: 010-6417-7845.

Dance like Bollywood diva

By Jenny Hammond (Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-19 14:52

Think of India and many people think of vivid colors, exotica, music,
beautiful women and the graceful dancing of Bollywood movies. The plots
are simple and memorable, about good and evil, boy meets girl, love,
separation and reunion. The eternals.

However, Bollywood dance is usually confined to DVDs and the glamor of
the Indian movie industry, centered in Mumbai, formerly Bombay.

Now, however, expats and locals in Shanghai are signing up to learn the
moves, with a new dance class starting in town, "Bollywood Dance."

Sangeetha Sander, an Indian-German dancer and newcomer to the city, has
started a Bollywood dance class this month at Jazz du Funk and promises
that anyone who makes an effort will be able to master it.

"It has no proper rules and definitions of how it should be danced. It is
more about the way of expressing what songs are about," says Sander, who
moved to Shanghai just last month.

"Many people here seem to be very interested in India and Indians, so I
get a lot of curious looks when I take the Metro or walk down the street.
From what I see, Chinese people can relate to the stories in the dance as
they are about clashes between tradition and modernity, family ties and
so on."

Most of Indian movies can be compared to a kind of musical. There are
usually five to six musical numbers in a movie, occurring in places where
the hero or heroine is are happy, sad, in love, and so on, says Sander.

"These are the songs that we use for Bollywood dance. They can be very
modern, folkloric, traditional or classical and are as important a part
in movies being well-received as the story of the movie itself," she says.

"Actually, 'Bollywood' to describe a type of dance is a fairly new
concept. Originally the term referred to a regional film industry but was
exploited in the non-Indian world to describe the whole of Indian movies
and its music," says Sander, who tries to show people the differences by
presenting them a variety of such songs and dances from all over India.

In Concession-era Shanghai, popular rhetoric held that the British (with
their Bund and banks) could teach you how to do business, but the French
could teach you how to live. Sitting with a glass of wine in the sunny
courtyard of Ferguson Lane, one might venture the opinion that little has
changed.

"It's like Xintiandi for locals," says Coffee Tree owner Neil Greer of
the new lifestyle hub, set back off leafy Wukang Lu. First-time
commercial developers Shanghai Cornes Property Management Co Ltd brought
in a trio of international architects to transform the former office
block tucked behind a row of red-brick terrace homes. The space has been
re-imagined with sheet glass and wooden boardwalks connecting the various
heritage outhouses, and neat alfresco areas trimmed with hedges and rose
bushes. The funky tenant mix combines offices, three complementary F&B
outlets, a Philippine spa (set to open in early July) and several niche
boutiques heretofore unseen in Shanghai.

Finish your wine and mosey along to the following:

Pistis-Impeccably chic friends Fristine Cho and Yunee Cho have interior
design and consultancy backgrounds and make regular buying trips to
Italy. Using the something I would put in my own home criterion, they
have collected some beautiful pieces of premium Italian furniture and
accessories for the innovative (and rich) home buyer. The launch
collection includes unique woven baskets, an embossed leather desk and
giant upright candles with diamante bands (supposedly all the rage in
Italy right now). The loft office will also be the headquarters of their
interior consultancy services.

Bliss-Blending chinoiserie and shabby chic, Bliss stocks an eclectic
array of pretty ceramics, quirky bits of dcor and jewelry, and pouches
made from Asian-inspired textiles. The silk baby booties are particularly
adorable.

Dutch Items Shanghai-Dutch designer Jolie Van Beek addresses the need for
affordable fashions in "western sizes, design, quality and taste" with
her easy-to-wear linen separates and footwear range.

Eva Longoria banned from having babies

Eva Longoria has been banned from having a baby with new husband,
basketball star Tony Parker, for at least a year by Desperate Housewives
bosses.

The actress, who plays Gabrielle Solis in the hit US show, got married to
Parker in a ceremony in France on Saturday.

But she has been told she is not allowed to start a family with him just
yet because being pregnant is not in her character's script.

Show boss Marc Cherry announced the news to the couple during his wedding
speech, but Longoria said she does not mind.

She said: "We're fine with that. We want to spend some time with each
other, even though we want kids very much."

Jazz and love in concert

By Zhang Qian (Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-13 14:10

Old Shanghai was known for its jazz and romance, and two Australian jazz
artists-who also are in love - are sharing their music and their
engagement party with the people of the city that still is known for its
jazz.

"Love in Shanghai," a jazz concert by singer Jacki Cooper and drummer
John Morrison, will be staged on Sunday at the Shanghai Oriental Art
Center. They will cooperate with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Jazz
Band. It will be hosted by Lin Dongfu, celebrity owner of the House of
Blues and Jazz.

Cooper and Morrison consider the concert their engagement party.

"When I asked Jacki, 'Will you marry me?' she said, 'Then you have to get
me a special wedding dress in Shanghai.' That's why we are here, and we
have already got the dress," says Morrison.

Cooper and Morrison, both from Sydney, met when they cooperated in a
concert three years ago. They shared more than their passion for jazz.

Cooper has performed with jazz greats Mark Murphy, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis
Nash, John Clayton, Madeline Eastman and Jim Cullum.

"Jazz makes people feel happy. The rhythm makes people want to dance,"
says Morrison. "If a two-year-old kid hears jazz, without knowing what
kind of music it is, he will just move spontaneously. When playing jazz,
we feel ourselves just like a carefree child."

Cooper agrees that if they don't play jazz for a few days, they will feel
something is missing.

Cooperating with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Jazz Band is an exciting
prospect. As a jazz educator, Morrison always feels it his responsibility
to pass on his experiences. This year he set up the Swing City Jazz Club
in Sydney and is dedicated to promoting jazz talent.

Together with his younger brother, renowned trumpeter James Morrison, he
has toured widely, performing at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreaux
Jazz Festival and the Royal Albert Hall.

"Jazz is not what can be simply learned from the blackboard or books," he
says. "I know that there's good jazz music in Shanghai and I'm looking
forward to the cooperation. I can experience Chinese traditional culture,
and they can learn from my experience."

The couple has prepared two Chinese songs for the concert, "Jasmine
Flower" and "Sweet Honey."

"Jazz is a universal language rather than just a style," says Lin.
"Shanghai can't be a perfect international big city without this
language."

Allen urges more needs to be done for British teenagers

Lily Allen

Pop star Lily Allen has urged the U.K. Government to do more for British
teenagers - insisting 'the number of teenagers who will go off the rails
is a problem for us all'.

The Smile hitmaker has spoken out after helping launch a report in which
16,000 teenagers were questioned for The Make Space Youth Review. More
than 70 per cent of 11-16-year-olds said they had witnessed anti-social
behaviour in the previous year and nearly one in eight said they belonged
to a gang.

Allen, 22, says, "They said give young people more of a stake in
communities and give us more opportunities. The number of teenagers who
will go off the rails is a problem for us all and instead of helping them
only after they are in crisis, we need to stop them getting into trouble
in the first place."

Longoria says she wasn't a bridezilla

This photo, supplied by OK magazine shows the cover photo of OK
magazine's latest issue
on newsstands Friday, July 13, 2007, showing Eva Longoria and Tony Parker
during their wedding
in Paris,France, on Saturday, July 7, 2007.[AP]

NEW YORK - The endless details were numbing, but Eva Longoria says she
kept her cool at her wedding to Tony Parker last week.

"My stylist, Robert Verdi, and everybody around me was like, `You're so
calm,'" Longoria tells OK! magazine in its latest issue, on newsstands
Friday. "I actually don't stress about anything."

The 32-year-old "Desperate Housewives" actress and the 25-year-old NBA
star wed in a civil ceremony in Paris last Friday. The following day,
they exchanged vows in a church across from the Louvre Museum and held an
exclusive reception at a storied French chateau.

"Every girl dreams of having a beautiful, romantic wedding," says
Longoria. "It was amazing to see it unfold after months of planning. We
really wanted to create an experience for our guests. It was about them
having fun."

That list included fellow "Housewives" Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman
and singer Sheryl Crow.

Parker, who was born in Belgium and raised in France, notes that Longoria
chose the wedding destination.

"I didn't want to do it in Paris because we'd end up inviting more people
than I wanted!" says Parker, eliciting laughs from Longoria.

Longoria also giggled during the wedding ceremony as she attempted to say
her vows in French.

"She decided I would do the vows in English; hers would be in French,"
Parker explains. "There were some tough words. I'm very proud of her."

Longoria and Parker are featured on the cover and inside the pages of the
magazine, which paid for its exclusive interviews. An OK! representative
wouldn't disclose the terms of its deal with the couple to The Associated
Press.

Fox, MGM fight breast cancer with DVD sale

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-11 13:50

LOS ANGELES - 20th Century Fox and MGM are teaming up on a giant DVD sale
to raise money for the fight against breast cancer.

On September 18 the two studios will re-release a dozen DVD titles chosen
to appeal to women, including "Thelma and Louise" and "Never Been
Kissed," in distinct pink packaging. Fifty cents from each DVD sold (the
list price is $14.98) will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a leading
research organization in the fight against the disease.

The studios have pledged a minimum donation of $250,000 in what's being
billed as "DVDs for the Cure."

"Consumers are evaluating the effects of their purchasing dollars and
given the choice will pick a product that positively impacts the greater
good, whether it's a green purchase to benefit the environment, a red
product for relief in Africa, or a pink product to support the quest for
a breast cancer cure," said Steve Feldstein, senior vice president of
marketing communications at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Other titles in the promotion include "An Affair to Remember," "A Walk in
the Clouds," "Entrapment," "Ever After," "In Her Shoes," "Legally
Blonde," "Mermaids," "Moulin Rouge," "Say Anything" and "There's
Something About Mary."

20th Century Fox and MGM have sponsored and contributed to various other
charitable groups, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the
USO and the Marine Mammal Center. But their support for Susan G. Komen
for the Cure is their largest charitable campaign to date, the studios
said.

German anti-Nazi hero backs Cruise in film on plot to kill Hitler

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-07-11 09:37

Tom Cruise received backing for his contested plans to play the
mastermind behind a daring bid
to assassinate Adolf Hitler from one of the real-life hero's fellow
conspirators,
Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager, seen here in 2004 in Kreuzberg.[AFP]

Tom Cruise received backing Tuesday for his contested plans to play the
mastermind behind a daring bid to assassinate Adolf Hitler from one of
the real-life hero's fellow conspirators.

Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager, 89, told the German daily Bild that the
uproar in Germany over the Hollywood star's links to the Church of
Scientology in no way disqualified him to play Count Claus Schenk von
Stauffenberg.

"I think it is good that Cruise is playing Stauffenberg," Boeselager said
in an interview to be printed Wednesday.

"He is a good actor. But he must not be allowed to advertise for
Scientology with the movie."

Filming is to begin next week in Berlin on "Valkyrie," named after the
code name of the plot.

But the city authorities have restricted where the crew can film and some
German officials have expressed discomfort with the idea of Cruise, a
dedicated Scientologist, playing a national hero and martyr.

Germany considers the Scientology movement a commercial operation that
exploits vulnerable people.

Boeselager belonged to Stauffenberg's cadre of aristocratic military
officers who conspired to kill Hitler in 1944.

The group planted a bomb under a table in Hitler's eastern headquarters
in East Prussia.

But the Nazi leader escaped with slight injuries because an officer had
moved the briefcase containing the explosives behind a sturdy leg of the
oak table.

Stauffenberg was rounded up that night and executed by firing squad along
with other officers at the Bendlerblock, then the army headquarters in
Berlin and now a memorial to the German resistance.

Boeselager, who had acquired the explosives used in the attacks, said he
believed the Hollywood thriller had an important message to send to
international audiences.

"I hope that the German resistance will become more well-known thanks to
the film. People know so little about it in the United States."

In Germany, the group is under observation by the Federal Office for the
Protection of the Constitution and several state security watchdogs.

But it is no longer being monitored by the Berlin authorities after a
successful court challenge by the group.

The US-based Church of Scientology is also regarded with suspicion in
European countries such as France and Belgium.

"Valkyrie" is directed by Bryan Singer and co-written by Christopher
McQuarrie, the team behind the Oscar-winning 1995 thriller "The Usual
Suspects".

On right path

Comment on "Former SFDA chief executed in Beijing" ( China Daily web,
July 10)

I hope the capital punishment meted out to this high-ranking official
will pose a deterrent and serves as a warning to other corrupt officials
in China.

Many lives could have been spared if not for his incompetence and he
rightly deserves his fate.

It is a good first step and a right move by the central government and
shows its determination to clamp down on government bureaucracy and other
malpractices.

I hope Chinese brand names will soon rebuild their image and regain
confidence and credibility locally and overseas.

Responsible parents

Comments on "Internet 'meetings' linked to pregnancy in Shanghai" (China
Daily, July 7 )

If it is true that 46 percent of parents are not acting like parents and
expect someone else such as schools to teach their children about sex,
then the situation will only get worse in the years to come.

I can only pray that some of these parents will wake up and begin to act
responsibly for a change. Burying your head in the sand is not going to
work.

On China Daily Website

I agree with the posts. Educate your kids on sex. You can blame TV,
movies, websites all you want but they are not going to go away and
blocking them from your kids may cut off some bad influences, but it will
also block a lot of good information that they need to learn.

Just teach your kids about sex and the consequences of unprotected sex.

Drivers' discipline

Comments on Zou Hanru's column "Mainland drivers need to shape up" (China
Daily, July 7)

I have driven a car in the Americas and in most European countries, and
witnessed traffic as a pedestrian in many other areas, including Hong
Kong and the mainland. Hong Kong drivers are indeed extremely careful and
disciplined, on a par with the best I have seen. The Chinese mainland
counts among the least disciplined.

Overall, however, the happy-go-lucky style of driving is on the rise. In
Eastern Europe, for example, people used to drive as the Swiss, but now
more as the Italians. This is because ignoring the rules, also called
"civic disobedience", is increasingly seen as a sign of "freedom" and
personal "emancipation".

In due time, traffic in the whole world will be one big mess, and then
perhaps we can finally get rid of this devilish invention.

Huaqiao

On China Daily website

Pedestrians are given too many rights, and are creating some of the
problems here.

The current situation is that no matter who is right or wrong, the car
driver always has to pay while the pedestrian or cyclist gets away
although they were the cause of the accident.

Disney's 'Gourd' makes $1M in China

ENTERTAINMENT / Movies

Disney's 'Gourd' makes $1M in China

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-09 18:16

HONG KONG - The Walt Disney Co.'s first non-Hollywood movie made more
than US$1 million (euro740,000) at Chinese box offices in its first week,
but "The Secret of the Magic Gourd," lagged far behind two of this year's
biggest American releases, the company said Monday.

Disney's first major venture into localized Chinese content, made more
than US$1 million (euro740,000), or 7.6 million Chinese yuan in the week
since its debut on June 29, the company said in a statement.

By comparison, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," earned 80
million yuan (US$10.5 million; euro7.7 million) in China in its first
week since its June 12 release, while "Spider-Man 3" brought in 70
million yuan (US$9.2 million; euro6.7 million), according to China's
state-run Xinhua News Agency.

But in terms of total receipts in 2007, Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man 3" is
still the overall winner at Chinese box offices, with takings of more
than 100 million yuan (US$13.2 million; euro9.7 million) since its May 2
debut.

"Pirates," another Disney movie, scored with viewers despite scenes
involving Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat, who played a bald, scarred
pirate, being cut by censors because they were deemed insulting.

Still, Disney said it was pleased with the performance of "Magic Gourd,"
pointing out that the movie, taken together with "Pirates," "gave Disney
a nice position at the Chinese box office."

The budget for "Magic Gourd," made at Hong Kong's Centro Digital
Pictures, wasn't immediately available, but it most likely cost
significantly less than the US$258 million (euro189.8 million) spent on
"Spider-Man 3." "Pirates" cost US$300 million (euro220.7 million),
according to the box office tracking Web site Box Office Mojo.

The Chinese cinema market is much smaller than its U.S. counterpart.
While an American hit can make hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars, a
box office take in the tens of millions would be considered a success in
China.

"Magic Gourd" is the first-ever Disney-branded movie made outside
Hollywood. Disney's famed animators were not involved.

It's a significant venture into local-flavored programming for a company
that has until now mainly banked on its mainstay characters like Mickey
Mouse and Donald Duck.

Disney says it plans to launch a story book and merchandise linked to
"Magic Gourd," as well as rolling out other Chinese Disney characters to
complement its more traditional ones.

"Magic Gourd," based on a famous Chinese children's story, is about a boy
who's troubled by his magical vegetable, which steals from others to
please him.

Live Nation aims to entice Madonna with deal

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-08-22 09:29

Madonna performs during the Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium in
London July 7, 2007.

NASHVILLE (Billboard) - The music industry is buzzing with talk that
Madonna is considering an exit from her longtime home, Warner Music Group.

Most of the focus centers on a deal said to be in the works with tour
promoter Live Nation that would encompass recorded music, touring,
merchandising and other business concerns.

Live Nation, the world's largest live event producer and venue operator,
has produced Madonna's past three world tours, which grossed about $400
million combined.

Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino has expressed a desire for the company to
form longer-term and more complex relationships with artists. But a
multifaceted deal with an artist of Madonna's stature -- one that would
include a label component as well as a Madonna's lucrative touring
business -- would be the most ambitious undertaking under Rapino's watch.

One source estimated the value of the Live Nation offer to be $180
million, with the company potentially licensing the recording rights for
about $30 million.

Madonna has two more albums due on her contract with WMG, according to a
label spokeswoman: an album of new material is expected late this year or
early 2008, and a greatest hits project.

It is doubtful that WMG, the only label to which Madonna has ever been
signed, would give up the Material Girl without a fight. Sources said
that company has made a counteroffer to Madonna that also includes a
touring component that could be helmed by rival promoter AEG Live. AEG
Live declined comment.

The WMG spokeswoman said the label hopes to continue with Madonna -- who
is "worshipped and respected as a great artist at the company" -- but is
not surprised that she is receiving rival offers.

Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson to star a film together

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-08-21 09:08

LOS ANGELES - Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson are to star in an
adaptation of "Marley Me," writer John Grogan's best-selling memoir about
a mischievous labrador retriever, it was reported Monday.

"Friends" and "Rumor Has It" star Aniston has signed to star alongside
funnyman Wilson ("Wedding Crashers," "You, Me and Dupree") for a film
that will begin production in 2008, Daily Variety reported.

Grogan's autobiographical 2005 book told the story of life with the
labrador following his adoption to help the journalist and his wife
prepare for parenthood.

The dog then proceeds to wreak havoc, getting kicked out of obedience
school, destroying furniture and causing general chaos while becoming a
beloved member of Grogan's family.

CITYLIFE / Travel Faces you won't forget (China Daily) Updated: 2007-08-16 09:40 As the first rays of sunlight reach the maze of old houses in Kashgar, Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the city gradually wakes up as the chanting of the Quran is heard from the mosque. Small alleys begin to pulse with merriment - vendors shouting, housewives chatting and children laughing. Local Muslim Uygurs who have lived in the city for generations start a new day as usual. A major hub on the old Silk Road over 1,000 years ago, the oasis has become a magnet for tourists from home and abroad. But those who want to catch a closer look at the local people and their lives should take a stroll around the old town, Shule, located atop the northeastern mountain in Kashgar. Shule, now home to 600 households, is a jumble of narrow stone streets and a dense web of multi-story earthen houses. Visitors could easily lose their way because it is riddled with twisting, turning streets that all look the same. According to historic records, rulers of the Kalahan Kingdom began to build their palaces and fortresses in Kashgar during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). But most of the relics of the kingdom were devastated by a flood a few centuries ago. Only a small part of the relics, located atop the mountain, survived and it's now called Shule by locals. Shule means "clay on the cliff" in the Uygur language and clay is the soul of the town. The houses are built with mud and wood and have withstood the test of time in spite of their fragile and shabby appearance. Some of them are about 600 years old. Like many other cities in the country, Kashgar has witnessed rapid development over the past decade, as a large section of the city has been torn down and replaced by high-rise residential blocks and wide roads. But time seems to stand still in Shule with the old houses intact and the locals sticking to their traditional lifestyle. Some of the houses were built by three generations: The father built the first floor, the son expanded it to a two-story house and then the grandson built another floor in the house. Every house has a story and the owner is willing to share it with visitors. The residents have lived in the town for generations and few of them like to move into new apartment buildings. Many of them still make a living with pottery and other handicrafts, a tradition they have carried on for many generations. Music and dance remain important in their lives and Uygurs seem to always have a song in their hearts and on their lips. Feature ? CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends In the lap of luxury By Ben Davey (Beijing Weeekend) Updated: 2007-08-15 09:43 The Regent ? If Raffles is updated colonial charm, The Regent is its younger, brasher rival. Most surfaces inside the hotel look shiny enough to eat eggs off but thankfully we did not have to test this theory as we had made reservations at one of The Regent's restaurants. Led to the elevator by smiling staff, the door to our Premium room swung open and while it wasn't the biggest room I had stayed in for this much dough (1,640 yuan per night), it was the use of the space that was impressive. Fit-out with the kind of furnishings that would not have been out of place in Gordon Gekko's office in Wall Street, the main sleeping area was smallish but elegant. ? But the bathroom was a showstopper. The circumference of the showerhead was actually considerably bigger than a human head, and as for the bath, it was so deep you could store enough ice and beers in it to keep even the most hedonistic housewarming running for days. The bathroom had glass walls with a view to the sleeping area, which could be blocked out by electric blinds. I think I spent at least ten minutes flicking the switch making the blinds go up and down, up and down. ? From the room service menu we ordered the lemon-marinated beef carpaccio and a frothy white-bean soup (85 yuan). A basket of bread came complimentary and after stuffing ourselves we surfed the flat screen televisions, which had all of the usual stations as well as two Western movies channels. ? The hotel's Italian restaurant - Deccapo - gives you more than a few reasons to drool. With an aesthetic in keeping with the rest of the hotel's contemporary-minded interior, the eatery boasts a comprehensive booze list featuring Australian, Chilean, French and Italian wines. As for the solids on offer, entrees include a generous antipasti sampler (115 yuan) and roasted tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad with rocket leaves and balsamic reduction (85 yuan). A mains highlight is the pecorino and thyme-crusted rack of lamb with olive mash, artichokes and caramelized garlic jus (180 yuan), and as for pasta - the herb ravioli with spinach, pan-fried scallops and light garlic foam (95 yuan) should please those with a tolerance for rich fare. If you can fit in dessert, you'd be daft to pass up the iced latte macchiato with baby banana and Baileys cream (65 yuan). With rotund bellies we waddled back to our room and laid down on one of the most comfortable beds this side of Saturn. ? At the in-house Serenity Spa we smelled the various oils available to be rubbed into our flesh by one of the masseuses. Upon choosing a fragrance, we were escorted to a large room with two beds, a generously-sized spa bath and a huge shower equipped with another one of those small-car-tire sized showerheads that was in our room. The masseuses were kind enough to ask how hard we would like to be kneaded and cracked, which was not an option I had been given at other establishments where the treatment was either too softy-softly or so forceful that the experience was akin with being stretched on a medieval rack. ? Sunday brunch at the Regent is all about extravagance. Bottomless glasses of champagne, foie gras, lobster, a chocolate fountain, caviar, cocktails, mocktails and even a saxophone player who looks like a cast member of Melrose Place. Here, your 15th glass of bubbly may numb the pain when you have to part with 390-odd yuan-per-head for this deluxe buffet. ? The Regent Location: 99 Jinbao Street, Dongcheng District. ENTERTAINMENT / Movies 'Rush Hour 3' debuts No. 1 at box office (AP) Updated: 2007-08-13 08:57 People rushed to theaters to see the buddy cop comedy "Rush Hour 3," making the last of this summer's big budget Hollywood films the top movie at the weekend box office. The film from New Line Cinema took in $50.2 million according to studio estimates, enough to push last week's top film, "The Bourne Ultimatum," into second place with $33.7 million. "Rush Hour 3" did not do as well as its predecessor, "Rush Hour 2," which took in $67.4 million when it was released in 2001. But it was the sixth "threequel" of the summer to open as a weekend's top film and it ranks as the fourth best August opening on record. "We really never felt we were going to get where the second one was," said David Tuckerman, head of distribution for New Line. "The competitive landscape has changed dramatically in the six years since the last film. We figured we'd be in the 50's and that's where we are." "The Bourne Ultimatum" crossed the $100 million mark in its second week in theaters. And with "The Simpsons Movie" coming in third with $11.1 million, for a three-week total of $152 million, Hollywood might be looking at its first $4 billion summer. "We've been riding a wave of momentum that started with 'Transformers' in July," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "We already stand at $3.6 billion at the box office. The $4 billion summer, once thought an impossibility, is definitely within reach." The summer movie season runs from the first weekend in May through Labor Day. No other blockbuster films are scheduled this summer. But next week's opening film, "Superbad," is from the same team that made this year's hit comedy "Knocked Up" and could do well, Dergarabedian said. This weekend's top 12 movies grossed 37 percent higher than the top dozen on the same weekend last year. So far this year, box office revenues are up 6.6 percent to $6.324 billion and attendance is up 1.9 percent. The other film opening this weekend, Paramount's "Stardust," a well-reviewed adult fairy tale starring Michelle Pfeiffer, didn't fare as well. It took in $9 million, good enough for fourth place behind "The Simpsons Movie," but not as much as might be expected for a film with a cast that included Robert DeNiro, Peter O'Toole and Claire Danes. The movie's theme made it difficult to market in a 30-second TV spot, said Rob Moore, Paramount's head of worldwide marketing and distribution. "When you make an original movie, it's always very challenging to be able to communicate to your audience what the genre is," Moore said. "These movies tend to be driven by word of mouth and home entertainment." Moore said it is expected to do better in international markets. The movie, which cost about $70 million to make, will be rolled out in Europe and other markets in October. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday. 1. "Rush Hour 3," 50.3 million. 2. "The Bourne Ultimatum," $33.7 million. 3. "The Simpsons Movie," $11.1 million. 4. "Stardust," $9 million. 5. "Underdog," $6.5 million. 6. "Hairspray," $6.4 million. 7. "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry," $5.9 million. 8. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," $5.4 million. 9. "No Reservations," $3.9 million. 10. "Daddy Day Camp," which opened Wednesday, $3.3 million. ? Oscar-winning Australian actress Nicole Kidman is to star in a Hollywood
remake of Colombian horror film "Al Final Del Espectro," it was reported
Wednesday.

The 40-year-old star of "Cold Mountain" and "Moulin Rouge" will play a
woman suffering from agoraphobia who moves to a new apartment building
after a tragedy and starts seeing ghosts, Daily Variety reported.

Juan Felipe Orozco, who helmed the original film released last year, has
been hired by studio chiefs at Universal to direct the remake.

Kidman, who won an Academy Award in 2003 for her portrayal of writer
Virginia Woolf in the "The Hours," is soon to appear in science-fiction
thriller "The Invasion," which is released in US theatres later this
month.

Pay to hear the sounds of silence

Updated: 2007-08-08 16:45

A German designer wants to sell a few minutes of silence to residents and
travelers in Shanghai.

Andreas Rimkus has designed a series of silence stations - noise-proof
booths that can hold up to 15 people at a time - that he would like to
set up in busy areas around the city, such as Nanjing Road Pedestrian
Mall.

People would pay a few yuan to enter and spend several minutes relaxing
in silence, according to Rimkus, who compares them to public bathrooms.

He is in talks with the city's government to show off the idea, which he
calls Shanghai Art Stations of Silence. Rimkus said he designed the
silence station for the city because he believes Shanghai is a city that
can make the impossible into possible.

The stations are designed like large public sculptures and come in
various shapes, according to Rimkus.

"If the stations appear in the city, they will become the world's first
stores to allow people to consume silence," Rimkus told the Oriental
Morning Post.

He said the inside of the stations looks like a typical office, with
space separated by cubicles.

Forbes: Damon's a 'Bourne' moneymaker

Forbes: Damon's a 'Bourne' moneymaker

(AP)
Updated: 2007-08-07 19:02

NEW YORK - Matt Damon is Hollywood's best investment, says Forbes.com.

For every dollar he was paid for his last three roles, Damon brought in
$29 of gross income, the site calculated.

That put the 36-year-old "Bourne" star atop a Forbes list of 22 film
heavyweights, ranked by the same financial formula.

The first two "Bourne" movies grossed an estimated $850 million at the
box office and in DVD sales, Forbes said. The third installment, "The
Bourne Ultimatum," opened last weekend and raked in $70.2 million at the
box office. It was the biggest August film opening ever.

Brad Pitt took second place on the list, with a gross income return of
$24 for each dollar of his pay, and Vince Vaughn tied with Johnny Depp
for third with $21.

Pitt's ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, is the most profitable actress with a
gross income return of $17. Pitt's current significant other, Angelina
Jolie, ranked sixth with $15.

"The biggest stars in Hollywood are not the actors that deliver the
biggest returns," Forbes senior editor Michael Ozanian said in a
statement Monday.

Russell Crowe is at the bottom of the list. His last three films — "A
Good Year," "Cinderella Man" and "Master and Commander" — averaged just
$5 in gross income for every dollar spent on the Oscar winner, Forbes
said.

Movies starring the two Toms — Hanks and Cruise — averaged $12 and
$11 of gross income, respectively. Will Smith and Denzel Washington each
brought in $10.

On the comedic front, Adam Sandler brought in $9 per dollar earned, Will
Ferrell and Jim Carrey $8 each).

Forbes.com calculated the net revenue for a film by adding the worldwide
box office and revenues from U.S. DVD and video rentals and then
subtracting its budget. The net revenue was divided by the actor's total
compensation to derive gross income. The average gross income of an
actor's last three films produced their box-office return.

The "Ultimate Star Payback" list was posted Monday.

Works by Monet, Brueghel stolen from museum

French impressionist Alfred Sisley's 1890 landscape 'Lane of Poplars at
Moret-sur-Loing' was
one of four paintings stolen by thieves from Nice's Cheret Museum August
5, 2007.[Reuters]

Armed thieves marched into an open museum in the southern French city of
Nice and stole four paintings by Impressionists Monet and Sisley, and
Flemish painter Jan Brueghel the Elder, police said on Monday.

The four men, wearing masks and helmets, forced staff at Nice's Cheret
Museum to lie on the ground on Sunday before they took the works of art
and left at around 1 p.m. (7 a.m. EDT).

Police said the men were probably working to order as the stolen works --
Claude Monet's "Cliffs near Dieppe," Alfred Sisley's "Lane of Poplars at
Moret-sur-Loing," and Brueghel's "Allegory of Water" and "Allegory of
Earth" are well known, making them hard to sell.

"They are priceless works, not at all negotiable on the market," the
museum's deputy curator, Patricia Grimaud, told Reuters, adding it was
not the first time the two Impressionist paintings had disappeared.

In 1998 Jean Forneris, the museum's curator at the time, stole the pieces
in a theft he organized with two accomplices.

He was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison in 2002, of which
3-1/2 years were suspended.

Sex file returns to haunt Madonna as she battles to keep baby David

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-08-03 19:22

Madonna's lawyers are fighting to stop a collection of love letters and
intimate photographs being made public at the same time as she tries to
make her adoption of a Malawian baby permanent.

The 17 notes and seven Polaroid snaps she sent in the early 1990s to then
boyfriend James Albright were recently sold to an investment company
specialising in Madonna memorabilia.

One of Madonna's poses from the early 1990s

The firm is now touting them around to the highest bidder and hoping to
make more than £100,000.

Some of the pictures, which the singer took of herself, show her naked in
explicit poses.

The collection also includes personal items such as underwear which
Madonna apparently sent to Albright during their two-year relationship.

Although she repeatedly posed nude at the time for her controversial
coffee-table book, Sex, she is understood to be devastated about the
arrival of such items on the market - particularly at such a sensitive
time.

The head of Malawi's child welfare service is about to spend a week with
Madonna and her family in London to assess whether they are fit to adopt

Rod Stewart's son sued over club spat

(AP)
Updated: 2007-08-02 19:56

LOS ANGELES?- Rod Stewart's son has been sued by a man who claims Sean
Stewart beat him up at a Hollywood nightclub last year.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles by Daniel Refoua, accuses
Stewart of assault, battery, false imprisonment, negligence and
intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Refoua's lawyer, Sean Bral, said his client was beaten up Jan. 5, 2006,
by a group including Stewart after accidentally bumping into the singer's
son at Hollywood's LAX nightclub.

The melee followed an argument between Refoua and Stewart, who had a
bodyguard with him, Bral said.

"The next thing you know, he gets punched in the face and he's getting
punched by Stewart and his bodyguard and whoever it was who was with
him," he said.

Refoua, who is in his 20s, suffered a fractured nose and other injuries,
Bral said. The lawsuit seeks unspecified general, special and punitive
damages.

"We invite him to come forward if they want a resolution in this, to sit
down early to talk as opposed to later," Bral said.

Stewart's lawyer, Peter J. Korn, did not immediately respond to a phone
message seeking comment.

Additional lawsuits may be filed against the others accused of attacking
Refoua, Bral said.

The lawsuit comes about two months after Stewart, one of the stars of the
A&E reality show "Sons of Hollywood," was arrested in a separate attack
on a couple outside a Hollywood Hills party.

The couple said they were in a truck in April when Stewart and others
confronted them and began punching and throwing bricks at them and the
vehicle.

Stewart has pleaded not guilty to felony charges in the case. He remains
free on $60,000 bail pending an Aug. 6 hearing.

Korn said the incident is "much different" than what has been alleged in
the complaint, and suggested the lawsuit was financially motivated.

Sean Stewart is Rod Stewart's son from his marriage to model-actress
Alana Stewart. The couple divorced in the early 1980s.

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson has laughed off claims she will play porn star Jenna
Jameson in a Hollywood biopic.

Jameson herself prompted reports at the Comic Con convention in San
Diego, California in July, when she said of the actress' performance in
Lost In Translation, "I remember thinking to myself, this girl has such a
sexuality without even really trying to be sexy. I was like, 'This girl
could play me.'

"I love her. She's amazing. She's smart, she's funny. ... She's stunning.

"I don't want someone who's going to go in there and be like bouncing
around. I want someone who can bring some depth."

But Johansson knows nothing of the film project - based on Jameson's book
How to Make Love Like A Porn - which is to be titled Heartbreaker.

Her representative tells People.com, "Scarlett has never seen a script
nor been approached about this project. She also has no interest in
playing this role."

Italian filmmaker Antonioni dies at 94

Italian filmmaker Antonioni dies at 94

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-31 19:14

ROME?- Michelangelo Antonioni, one of Italy's most famous and influential
filmmakers, has died at the age of 94, city officials in Rome said on
Tuesday.

Considered the cinematic father of modern angst and alienation, Antonioni
had a career spanning six decades which included the Oscar-nominated
"Blowup" and the internationally acclaimed "L'Avventura" (The Adventure).

His death on Monday night followed that of Swedish film legend Ingmar
Bergman, who died on Monday aged 89.

"With Antonioni, not only has one of the greatest living directors been
lost, but also a master of the modern screen," said Rome mayor Walter
Veltroni. His office said it was making plans for Antonioni's body to lie
in state on Wednesday.

Antonioni's deliberately slow-moving and oblique movies were not always
crowd pleasers but films such as "L'Avventura" turned him into an icon
for directors like Martin Scorsese, who has described him as a poet with
a camera.

Antonioni was born in 1912 in the northern Italian city of Ferrara. He
directed his first feature, "Cronaca di un amore" ("Story of a Love
Affair"), in 1950 at the age of 38.

Over the next two decades Antonioni worked with some of the greatest
names in post-war Italian cinema like Marcello Mastroianni but it was not
until the 1960s that he emerged on the international stage.

Despite winning favorable reviews at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival with
"Il Grido" ("The Outcry") he scored his first real international success
in 1960 with "L'Avventura," an exploration of the emotional sterility of
modern society.

His second breakthrough picture came in 1966 with the English-language
"Blowup," set in "swinging 60s" London, which turned him into a cult
figure for moviegoers and moviemakers.

Many audiences found his pictures, with their long lingering shots,
plodding and pretentious. Others hailed him as one of the founding
fathers of European avant-garde cinema.

Next came the disappointing "Zabriskie Point" in 1970 and "The
Passenger," starring Jack Nicholson, in 1975.

He continued working after suffering a paralyzing stroke in 1983.

He was awarded Venice's Golden Lion in 1983 and a U.S. Academy Award in
1995 for his lifetime achievements.

Life' series.[AP]

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are saying goodbye to "The Simple Life."

The series finale will air Sunday on E!, the channel announced Monday.
The program, which debuted on Fox in 2003, threw the privileged duo into
everyday situations.

This season, the reality show reunited Hilton, 26, and Richie, 25, as
drama camp counselors after they feuded and filmed their parts separately
for the previous season.

"In this last escapade, Paris and Nicole write their own play in tribute
to their decades-long friendship, enlisting the help of celebrity
counselor Sally Kirkland to lead the production," E! said in a release.

Kirkland leads the pair and their campers through a "crash course in
Acting 101" as they stage the play, which includes the actress playing
the role of Richie's father, pop star Lionel Richie, E! said.

The high-living Hilton and Richie have routinely made headlines with
their behavior and the legal repercussions that followed.

Last week, Richie, 25, was sentenced to nearly four days in jail after
pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of
drugs. Richie, who is rumored to be pregnant but has refused to comment,
must complete her jail time by Sept. 28.

Richie had a previous DUI conviction, in June 2003, involving alcohol.

Hotel heiress Hilton spent 23 days in jail for violating probation in an
alcohol-related reckless driving case. She was initially released after
three days for medical reasons but a judge intervened and she was sent
back to jail after one just one night out.

Spice Girls announce new tour dates in China, US, Canada

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-07-29 20:00

LONDON - The Spice Girls announced new dates in China, the United States
and Canada on Friday as part of a six-continent, 14-night reunion tour.

(L-R) Spice Girl members Victoria Beckham, Mel C, Geri Halliwell, Emma
Bunton and Mel B pose for photographs before a press conference in east
London, June 2007. [AFP]

The British 1990s girl band, one of the most successful pop acts of all
time, will now play in Shanghai in China, San Jose in California and
Vancouver in Canada on the December 2007/January 2008 tour.

They have shelved plans to kick off the shows in Los Angeles, the adopted
home city of band member Victoria Beckham, whose footballer husband David
joined the LA Galaxy team earlier this month.

The first stop on the tour is now Vancouver on December 2.

It will then go to San Jose, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, London,
Cologne, Madrid, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Sydney and Cape Town
before ending at Buenos Aires on January 24, 2008.

The Spice Girls sold over 50 million records worldwide and scored nine
British number one singles, including "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life".

They announced they were reforming for a comeback tour last month but
have denied the move is financially motivated.

Some three million people have registered for a lottery for the chance to
buy tickets, which promoters set up due to high demand.

"We have just found out that we've had over three million ticket requests
on the website. As our own VB (Victoria Beckham) would say, that is
'major'!" the band said in a statement.

Fans can also vote for the band to come to their hometown on the website.

Why can't all mosquitoes bite the dust?

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

Why can't all mosquitoes bite the dust?

By Liu Jun (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-27 10:55

My husband came home one morning complaining of mosquito bites. No, he
did not spend the night in the jungle, he works night shift in a national
news corporation.

Despite freezing air-con - prompting the anchor ladies to put on heavy
wintry coats - the mosquitoes that usually thrive in steaming summer are
abnormally active in the spacious studio.

Throughout the night, one could hear "smack!" here and there from the
cubicles where the editors work. My husband is amazed at how the charming
ladies could curse when they are sure nobody sees them. But more amazing
is how clever and resilient the mosquitoes can be.

Lu Xun, a great writer and thinker of modern Chinese history, once wrote
about his medical studies in Japan in the early 20th century. To fend off
the mosquitoes, he wrapped himself up with clothes, leaving only a hole
for breathing. "Where air is constantly going in and out, the mosquitoes
find no place to sting. I thus had a good sleep."

This article was included in middle school textbooks. Strangely, we don't
remember anything about the cherry blossoms or the Japanese doctor who
was very strict on Lu Xun. The passage on mosquito, however, serves as a
motto when we battle the insect.

However, I suspect that mosquitoes have also learned from the article, as
they are obviously much more intelligent than a century ago.

Even though my husband wraps himself up and leaves no entry open, one or
two smart mosquitoes always manage to creep inside and treat themselves
to a big meal.

"As soon as I open my eyes, they'd take off in laughter before I moved a
muscle," sighed my husband, counting red bumps on his arm. "I've eaten
Vitamin B pills and rubbed Baby Gold Water all over me!"

Baby Gold Water (Baobao Jinshui) is a brown liquid made of herbal
medicine for children to fend off insects. Each time our 2-year-old boy
goes out to play, he'd hop up and down, singing: "Bao Bao Jin (Baby
gold)!"

Every night, we check the mosquito net over his small bed several times.
We fan the window screen vehemently before pulling it up to close the
window.

Still, my son woke up one day, scratching his head. "The mosquito has
planted a small mushroom!"

My mother has a primitive but effective treatment for mosquito bites.
Apply a bit of your own saliva and press your fingernail twice and hard
on the bump to curb the itch.

"We planted vegetables and carried goods along mountain paths besieged by
all sorts of insects. We had no medicine at that time," says Mum who can
recognize many medicinal herbs she learned in her childhood in Sichuan.

I grew up in Yunnan. The locals pride themselves with "18 eccentric
things", one of which was: Three big mosquitoes could be a dish. But we
soon realized, those palm-sized mosquitoes never stung. The tiny ones
with black-white legs were the real savages. "Any scientist who can get
rid of mosquito, fly and rat ought be granted the Nobel Peace Prize!" my
husband declared to our son. Until that scientist grows up, we'll have to
contend ourselves with my mother's method, or hope for winter to come
sooner.

SCO exercises sample of anti-terrorist operation

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-07-29 09:00

The upcoming exercise of member-states of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) is a prototype of an anti-terrorist operation, deputy
commander of Russian's Ground Force, Lieutenant-General Vladimir
Moltenskoy said Saturday.

The SCO exercise code named Peace Mission-2007 is, "in essence, a
prototype of an anti-terrorist operation, the major task of which is to
neutralize resistance and destroy terrorists," Moltenskoy was quoted as
saying by the Itar-Tass news agency at the Cherbarkul training area, near
the south Ural city of Chelyabinsk.

"The maneuvers will be broadcast by television. A documentary film will
be made and be used as training aid for the Armed Forces of the SCO
member-states," the Russian general said.

"The SCO military-political leadership will give an assessment to the
troops' actions during the exercise," Moltenskoy said.

The Peaceful Mission-2007 exercises will be held on the territory of the
Volga-Urals military district on Aug. 9-17 with the participation of the
Russian Armed Forces, units of the 34th motor rifle division, army and
tactical aviation of the 5th army of the Air Forces and Air Defense,
units of Airborne Forces, Interior Forces, Corrections Central
Department, Border Service and other departments.

Senate panel OKs China currency bill

Senate panel OKs China currency bill

(Agencies/chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-07-27 10:10

Chinese currency and US dollar banknotes are seen in this photo taken on
July 10, 2007. [newsphoto]

WASHINGTON - The US Senate Finance Committee voted 20-1 on Thursday to
give the US government new tools to press China to raise the value of its
currency, but the Bush administration said it opposed the bill.

The overwhelming vote shows Congress is headed toward passing legislation
by a big enough margin to overcome any presidential veto, said Sen.
Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat who helped craft the measure.

The bill's most significant provision requires the Commerce Department to
take "currency undervaluation" into account when calculating anti-dumping
duties on foreign goods, said Senate Finance Committee Max Baucus, a
Montana Democrat.

That could lead to higher duties already in place on many Chinese
products, and encourage US companies to seek new duties on additional
Chinese goods.

The US claimed that its trade deficit with China soared to a record
$232.5 billion in 2006 and is on track to surpass that this year. Some
lawmakers believe China's currency is undervalued by 25 percent to 40
percent, giving it a big price advantage in the US market and making US
goods more expensive in China.

The panel vote came just a few days before US Treasury Secretary Henry
Paulson is headed back to Beijing for talks, including quicker action on
currency reform.

"(We) do not believe the approaches taken in the bill reported today
would strengthen the hand of the United States in achieving essential
economic reform," the Treasury Department said in a statement.

A faster appreciation in the yuan was not a panacea to the broadening
U.S.-Chinese trade deficit or other ills, such as losses in manufacturing
jobs, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said last week.

Sen. Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat, said she voted against the
bill because she feared China's reaction.

"I do have concern this bill will be perceived as protectionist" and
invite retaliation, she said.

Boeing Co. is one of Washington's state biggest employers, and China is
one of Boeing's biggest customers.

China has made it clear that it won't cave in to US demands for faster
gains to ease the US trade deficit, saying a "large" appreciation of the
yuan would hurt China's economy.

The yuan's value wasn't the cause of the deficit, Wu said at a dinner in
Washington attended by Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S.
Bernanke in May. About 85 percent of China's surplus with the US is from
foreign companies exporting products no longer made in the US, such as
shoes, she added.

Baucus described the bill as a broad compromise that puts pressure on
both the Bush administration and China without running afoul of World
Trade Organization rules.

"Today China's renminbi is the focus of our concerns. Tomorrow another
economy's currency may threaten even more devastating effects," Baucus
said.

The bill would repeal current law requiring the Treasury Department to
determine every six months whether a foreign country is manipulating its
currency for a trade advantage, and replace it with a new semi-annual
report identifying countries with "fundamentally misaligned currencies."

Sen. Charles Grassley, an Iowa Republican, said the legislation would
force the Bush administration to stop "pussyfooting" on the issue by
establishing clear criteria to identify countries with fundamentally
misaligned currencies, and requiring penalties -- such as increased
anti-dumping duties -- if they fail to make reforms within 90 days.

The bill also would require the Bush administration to take action
through the International Monetary Fund and eventually the World Trade
Organization against targeted countries that refuse to reform their
currency policies.

Another provision would let the Federal Reserve intervene in global
markets against the misaligned currency if the country has not made
appropriate reforms one year after being cited by the United States.

Several senators wanted the bill to define undervalued currencies as a
government subsidy to allow US companies to seek potentially larger
duties on Chinese goods.

Baucus and Grassley fought that approach on the grounds that it would
violate WTO rules.

But others disagreed and said they would push for that provision in the
final bill that emerges from Congress.

In its statement, the Treasury Department said it feared the Senate
Finance Committee's bill could violate international rules.

Mainland stock market eyes huge IPOs

By Zhang Ran (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-25 06:52

The mainland stock market will become one of the world's most attractive
financial centers this year in terms of new share issues, or initial
public offerings (IPOs), financial analysts have said.

In the second half of the year, in particular, the Chinese mainland stock
market (combining the exchanges in Shanghai and Shenzhen) is expected to
raise 1.1 trillion yuan ($144 billion) - an eight-fold increase over the
first half.

According to Bloomberg, the 44 IPOs in the A-share market raised 124
billion yuan ($16.5 billion) in the first half, compared with 106 IPOs on
the New York Stock Exchange Group (merged with Euronext), which raised
$46 billion.

($55 billion) on the A-share market.

So they "represent a demand for large amount of money in the A-share
market," said Zhang Qi from Haitong Securities.

"The regulators will have to watch the market closely. If liquidity does
not look good, IPOs may be postponed."

However, She Minhua, an analyst with Beijing-based CITIC China
Securities, believes the A-share market will be awash with liquidity in
the second half despite the recent central bank move to hike the interest
rate and the government decision to cut the tax on interest income from
20 percent to 5 percent.

"The real deposit interest rate is still in negative territory,
considering June's CPI rise to 4.4 percent. Bank deposits may absorb part
of the liquidity from the stock market, but not that much," he said.

Among the largest companies that are likely to offer domestic IPOs are
China Coal Energy, PetroChina, and some red-chips listed in Hong Kong.

China Coal Energy Co Ltd, the nation's second-largest coal producer by
sales, was the most recent H-share company to announce its domestic
listing plan. In a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange on July 16,
it said it planned to issue 1.5 billion yuan ($197 million) worth of
shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

PetroChina, a subsidiary of China's largest oil producer China National
Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), announced in early June that it will issue
up to 4 billion yuan ($526 million) worth of shares in Shanghai.

According to the Hong Kong stock exchange, by the end of May, 22 of the
93 red chip companies met the requirements to list in the mainland.

The A-share market has seen IPOs surge since earlier this month.
According to Shanghai-based Wind Data, six companies have launched IPOs
this month, raising 18 billion yuan ($2.4 billion), equal to the amount
raised in the previous two months.

A lavish funeral...for pet dog

Updated: 2007-07-23 17:05

A funeral home in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu recently
received a big contract -- preparing a 100,680-yuan (US$13,310) funeral
-- for a deceased dog.

A photographer takes photos of a dead dog, which has been placed inside a
well-arranged coffin, on Sunday, July 22, 2007. The dog's owner has spent
100,680 yuan (US$13,310) on a funeral for the pet. [West China City Daily]
On Sunday before the two-day funeral began, Lin, the dog's owner in his
late seventies, signed his name on the agreement which details every
expense of the amount, the local West China City Daily reported.

According to the contract, Lin will pay 4,000 yuan each day for renting
the funeral space and another 4,000 yuan for workers. On Monday, a luxury
Cadillac will take the dog to its final resting place -- rental of the
car will cost 10,000 yuan.

A senior staff member of the funeral home was quoted in the report as
saying that at first they refused to arrange such a luxurious funeral for
a dog, but were later moved by Lin's story.

The report says that the retired professor met the stray dog three months
ago when he came to live in Chengdu alone from the northeastern city of
Dalian. Lin suffers from high blood pressure and is a frequent visitor to
the hospital. His children are all busy with their work, and the
widower's only companion was the dog.

The lavish pet funeral inevitably raised eyebrows among locals, many of
whom complained it was unnecessary.

However, Lin told the reporter that the dog, which died of an unknown
disease, was a sympathetic and loyal friend, and that all he is trying to
do is express his great grief over its passing.
